Ryan Hreljac has been raising funds for projects in developing countries with the help of many others, since the age of six. His work has helped to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Africa who might not otherwise have been able to lead healthy, normal lives. Without access to clean water people become ill and sometimes even die. When Ryan learned this, he decided to dedicate his young life to building commitment, support and opportunities for children and youth to contribute to society through international co-operation.

Spread the Net was born when Belinda Stronach and Rick Mercer traveled to Africa in 2006 with Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the UN Millennium Project and The Earth Institute at Columbia University. It was there that they saw first hand the devastating effects of Malaria, and the shockingly simple bednet solution so out-of-reach for many thousands of African families.

Everyone has a right to clean water. Since 2008 over $100,000 has been raised for clean water systems in forgotten villages in Ethiopia through a 5K, 10K, and half marathon in a non-profit Run for Water in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The community event includes an educational component in which local schools get involved in social responsibility. The schools go through lesson plans on the dire need for water in Ethiopia. They can fundraise or host their own mini Run for Water at their school and then they participate in the community event, along with hundreds of other runners. The funds have enabled villages in Ethiopia to have a clean water tap which has given children and villagers clean water for the rest of their lives, enabling many young girls to go to school for the first time instead of trekking most of the day to collect clean water for their families. The annual Run for Water will be on May 30th, 2010, with a sister run in Burlington, Ontario on May 29th.
